The protagonist overthinks the subject for far too long, builds up the courage, and then makes a dramatic show of asking their love interest out. It's a trope that's as old as anime itself, and any anime fan has seen it dozens of times. In romantic comedies, however, some characters do not live happily ever after.

Despite its popularity in the genre, numerous shows have created their own versions of the confession scene. Some people begin with admissions right away, while others wait until later. In terms of the outcome, there are just two options: acceptance or rejection. 

At least a hundred anime characters are rejected by their love interests for every character whose confession is accepted. They occasionally reunite later in the story. However, for the character who confesses later on, it might sometimes lead to an even better romantic prospect.

Tomoe Initially Rejected Nanami. It is forbidden for yokai and humans to fall in love in Kamisama Kiss. Tomoe used to be a firm believer in this, and was initially opposed to Nanami assisting Himemiko, a catfish yokai, in confessing to Kotaro, a human. 

Nanami and Tomoe spend a lot of time together because Tomoe is her friend. Nanami's heartstrings were pulled by Tomoe's constant protection, and she eventually fell in love with him. Tomoe was enraged when she confessed and seized her. He carried her across the skyscraper's edge till she regained consciousness. Nanami's affections for Tomoe never completely faded; fortunately, Tomoe eventually fell in love with her. 

Re:Zero

Subaru Told Rem That He Loves Someone Else. Subaru answered to Rem's confession by declaring he was in love with someone else in Re:Zero, which was one of anime's most brutal rejection scenes.

Rem delivered him a moving speech that was equal parts romantic confession and motivational talk about his personal power. Unfortunately for her, Subaru did not fall head over heels for her after admitting his feelings for Emilia. Fortunately, Rem handled the rejection well and was able to move on. 

Bakemonogatari

Tsubasa's Rejection Was Surprisingly Liberating.Tsubasa has always loved Koyomi, but she has never told him. Because she was afraid of taking that chance, these feelings continued to drag her down like chains throughout Bakemonogatari. 

She finally had enough and confessed to him, despite the fact that he was in a solid relationship at the time. Tsubasa expected to be rejected, but the fact that she didn't have to keep her feelings bottled up made the rejection surprisingly liberating. After all these years, it was finally expressing her truth that set her free. 

Your Lie In April 

Tsubaki Works Up The Courage. Your Lie in April covers the lives of Kousei, a kid prodigy musician, and Kaori, the girl he loves. Tsubaki, Kousei's childhood friend, quickly discovers she has love for him. 

Tsubaki eventually musters the guts to tell Kousei how she feels. She, on the other hand, flees right away, fearful of his rejection. Of course, despite her being in a relationship with his best buddy, Kousei is over over heels in love with Kaori at the time. Tsubaki, on the other hand, is adamant about getting what she wants.

Toradora

Ryuji & Taiga Strike A Deal. Because Ryuji likes Taiga's buddy Minori and Taiga likes Ryuji's friend Yusaku, Ryuji and Taiga promise to help each other get over their infatuation in Toradora. 

They each get their chance to confess at some point. Minori and Yusaku, unfortunately for them, detect feelings between Ryuji and Taiga and reject their confessions. In the end, things work out nicely for the couple, but the rejections put them both on the back foot. 

Masamune-kun's Revenge

Masamune Wants His Revenge. Masamune-Revenge kun's begins with an incident that occurred during the eponymous character's childhood.

He tells the lovely Aki Adagaki about his feelings. She responds by rejecting him and referring to him as "Pig's foot." Masamune pledges to get in shape and take better care of himself as a result of this occurrence so that he will be more handsome when he is older. When they meet again in high school, he plots his vengeance right away. 

The Quintessential Quintuplets

Nino & Ichika Take The Initiative. The Indisputable Futaro Uesugi educates five identical sisters who are on the verge of failing in school in Quintuplets, a harem romantic comedy. Nino and Ichika, in particular, have taken a shine to him. The former confesses to him first, but she does not allow him to respond because she knows deep down that he is not feeling the same way at the time. 

Ichika subsequently admits her affections as well, although in an ineffective manner. This irritates Futaro, who rejects her rudely and abandons her in the rain. 

Gamers!

Tendo Discovers Love Through Rejection. Keita, the protagonist of Gamers!, is a loner. He enjoys playing video games in his leisure time, and Karen Tendo, a classmate, invites him to join her after-school video game club. He determines it's not for him after checking it out because he's not a competitive gamer. 

Tendo is devastated by the rejection and becomes preoccupied with persuading Keita to join the club. She develops a crush on him as she continues to discover more about him. 

Osamake: Romcom Where The Childhood Friend Won't Lose 

Sueharu & Kuroha Are Both Rejected . Sueharu is confessed to by his childhood buddy Kuroha in Osamake: Romcom Where the Childhood Friend Won't Lose, but he rejects her because he already has emotions for a classmate, Shirokusa. He discovers Shirokusa already has a boyfriend when he confesses to her.

Sueharu and Kuroha then collaborate to devise a scheme of vengeance against Shirokusa. Sueharu recognises his own love for Kuroha as they become closer, so at the culmination of their plot, he confesses to her in front of the entire school. Kuroha eventually rejects Sueharu.

Monthly Girls Nozaki-Kun

Sakura Accidentally Finds A New Job Through A Failed Love Confession. Monthly Girls' Nozaki kun's plot revolves around rejection and a major misunderstanding. Sakura, the protagonist, works up the nerve to reveal her feelings to her classmate Nozaki at the start of the series. 

Nozaki, on the other hand, isn't the sharpest and believes she's a fan who wants his autograph, which he gladly gives. Sakura, perplexed, tries again, telling him she wants to be with him. Nozaki believes she wants to work as his assistant this time because he is a well-known manga artist.
